THE KHMER MOVEMENT FOR DEMOCRACY

A group of dedicated and long-time activists, human rights defenders and politicians have been working together to create the Khmer Movement for Democracy (KMD). I am putting much of my time into it and write to kindly ask for your support and cooperation.

Cambodians are deeply concerned about the state of our nation. Decades of corruption and authoritarian rule have left our people impoverished, our democracy dismantled, and our natural resources plundered.

Those who believe in democracy are in danger, after the unconstitutional dissolution of the loyal opposition, the Cambodia National Rescue Party in November 2017, the unlawful arrest of opposition members and human rights defenders, and the closure of the independent media.
The democratic space inside Cambodia has been simply shut down.

We believe that the time for change has come. We are inspired by those from all walks of life who continue the struggle for democracy and the rule of law inside and outside of Cambodia. We are committed to carrying on their struggle for democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Cambodia.

With this in mind, we, the founding members, met in Washington DC, on 24-25 September 2023 and agreed to establish a movement for democracy in Cambodia. The movement is open to all Cambodians regardless of their political persuasion.

We aspire to create a Cambodia where genuine democracy prevails and the dignity of all citizens is respected. We aim to empower Cambodians to be able to exercise their rights to choose their government through free and fair elections, as stated in the 1993 constitution and the 1991 Paris Peace Accords.

Only a democratic government can ensure a just and equitable society, protect our national resources and environment, and build a prosperous economy that benefits all Khmers.

We will mobilize Cambodian environmental and political activists, human rights defenders, migrant workers, women, indigenous communities and religious communities to participate in a democratic movement for the betterment of Cambodia. We will work with democratic partners around the globe. Our movement is committed to non-violence and peaceful advocacy.

We aim to engage with citizens’ representatives and stakeholders to establish a professional judicial system and rule of law that applies to all. We will work to establish mechanisms to implement economic reforms to create jobs and equal opportunities and to reduce poverty.

Our movement will defend frontline activists through legal support and capacity building. We will support migrant Cambodian workers who have been victimized by the current regime. We will foster the development of leadership skills, ultimately empowering a new young generation to assume leadership roles within their communities. We also aim to establish a center to promote and restore Khmer national and cultural identity.
