Another Brutal Attack On Government Critic

The Khmer Movement for Democracy (KMD) is outraged by the brutal attack on Cambodian Australian citizen San Bunchay during his family visit in Battambang, Cambodia. This cowardly act of violence against a peaceful critic is yet another confirmation that Hun Manet’s government is nothing more than a continuation of the brutal regime that has plagued Cambodia for far too long.

The lack of accountability for previous attacks against activists and dissidents leaves no doubt who is behind these acts. When perpetrators walk free, the message is clear: these are
not random acts of criminality, but government-orchestrated actions aimed at silencing dissent.

Mr. Bunchay’s injuries, including six stitches in his head, serve as a chilling reminder. This attack could have easily turned fatal, all in broad daylight and in front of his terrified family and children. Must a life be lost before the international community resolutely condemns this regime and its brutal leaders are directly sanctioned?

The KMD demands a swift and transparent investigation into this attack. We call on the Cambodian authorities to end their campaign of domestic and transnational intimidation and violence against those who dare to speak out.

The world is watching and the UN will debate Cambodia’s terrible human rights records in a few weeks in Geneva. Cambodian citizens deserve better.

KMD stands in solidarity with Mr. Bunchay and all Cambodians who fight for democracy and freedom of expression. We will not be silenced.
