The Khmer Movement for Democracy (KMD) once again unequivocally condemns the recent aggression by the Thai army against Cambodia’s territorial integrity in Techo Morokot Village, Morokot Commune, Choam Ksan District, Preah Vihear Province, in the Triangle area bordering Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. This incident, which occurred on the morning of May 28, 2025, tragically resulted in the death of Cambodian soldier Warrant Officer Suon Roun.
We once again extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Warrant Officer Suon Roun, honoring him as a true patriot who sacrificed his life in service to our nation. KMD demands accountability from the Thai army for this armed aggression and for the loss of Warrant Officer Suon Roun.
Given the ongoing violations by the Thai side, KMD believes it is imperative for Cambodia to halt bilateral negotiations regarding this territorial dispute. These negotiations have proven unproductive and only serve to perpetuate a chronic conflict that threatens our territorial integrity and endangers the lives of soldiers and civilians on both sides.
In this regard, KMD fully supports the statement made by Mr. Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, on the evening of May 30, 2025, proposing that Cambodia and Thailand bring the border issue in the Triangle area to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, supported by witnesses and evidence from officially recognized international maps. Additionally, KMD also encourages the Hun Manet government to present the disputes concerning Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Toch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple, Koh Kut, and the overlapping claim areas in the Gulf of Thailand to the International Court of Justice. Pursuing this matter through the International Court of Justice is the best way to achieve international dispute resolution, reflecting the collective will of the Cambodian people, both at home and abroad. KMD believes that the protection of our national integrity is the obligation of all Cambodians, not just a specific group or individual.
Resolving the territorial integrity dispute at the International Court of Justice honors the brave Cambodian fighters who resisted the Thai invasion and those who sacrificed their lives to defend our sovereignty. This resolution is essential for achieving lasting peace between our nations, transforming the Cambodian-Thai border into one characterized by peace, friendship, and cooperation.
